5th Grade studied Monochromatic painting as well as value and shade. The students began by drawing the basic shape of a pear. As a group, we identified the direction in which we wanted to portray the source of our light. From there, we discussed where the shading would occur on the pear and where the highlights would appear. We discussed how we would create the value for tints and shade using a monochromatice theme. The students defined monochromatic in the terms of painting. This was a wonderful one day project and the students retained a lot of information and enjoyed creating pairs that still appeared realistic even though pears are not blue.
